Since 1989, people have gathered in Centennial for a mid-winter party known as the Poker Run. Over its several decades of existence, the Centennial Poker Run has boomed into a destination event that attracts hundreds of participants annually. In what would have been its 32nd year, the Poker Run has been officially canceled because of COVID-19. The idea worked. Saturday, October 24, saw the first annual Classic Car Poker Run in Pamlico County. Players registered their poker hand (and cars) at Minnesott Beach Golf and Country Club and received the first card in their hand. The Run’s route took them to Bojangles, Lupton’s Electronics, River Dunes, and ended at Lou Mac Park in Oriental. A poker run is a fun way to earn money for a charitable cause. While there are many variations, typically a poker run involves participants collecting playing cards from specified locations. At the end of the run, the participant with the best poker hand wins the prize.
